The Nature of Art: Painted Parks, an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project

The Richmond Art Museum is proud to announce the opening of The Nature of Art: Painted Parks, an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project that will feature 70 paintings by noted Indiana “plein air” artist, Rick Wilson depicting the 24 Indiana state parks and 8 reservoirs in Indiana.  The Richmond Art Museum (RAM) in partnership with the Cope Environmental Center in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Indiana Parks system has organized this exhibition.

The State of Indiana has a rich artistic heritage and legacy.  In particular, Hoosier artists have recorded the beauty of the Indiana landscape for over 150 years.  The famed Hoosier Group, Brown County Art Colony and the Richmond Group art colony actively painted our landscape.  Continuing in that rich tradition, Indiana Plein Air Painters like Rick Wilson are actively recording the landscape of today.  Rick Wilson is recognized state-wide by his peers and art institutions as one of the leading landscape painters working in Indiana.

Recently, the State of Indiana has developed Bicentennial Legacy Conservation Areas, highlighting the importance of preserving our landscape and providing meaningful experiences for the citizens of Indiana.  Cope Environmental Center has been designated as one of those areas and received deserved recognition for their organization.

This project merges two important aspects of our state, the arts and environment, into a visual, experiential project that would bring awareness not only to the arts but to the efforts to preserve, protect and enjoy our parks.

RAM and Cope Environmental Center have developed educational curriculum as well as a documentary and catalog for the exhibition.  The exhibition has been made possible in part with a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission with funds appropriated from the Indiana State Legislature.
