Richmond Baking Company Shares Exciting New Plans for Growth in Versailles, KY

Versailles, KY: More Than A Bakery, LLC is pleased to announce the creation of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to be located in Versailles, KY. The bakery is planned to be between 250,000-300,000 square feet and will be located on 100+ acres to allow for future expansion. Products to be manufactured include cookies and crackers with customers ranging from Fortune 100 companies to smaller, regional businesses.

More Than A Bakery brings together baking executives with decades of experience to create an environment very unique in the industry. “We are designing a work experience that’s attractive as a place to live, work, and spend a career. We appreciate that life needs balance and want to ensure that people enjoy their careers. We are committed to providing the people who work at More Than a Bakery with a living wage and an environment where careers can grow and thrive,” says Derek Crawford, Director of Family Growth, and a new resident to Versailles.

“The decision by More Than A Bakery to locate its facility in Versailles, Kentucky, was the culmination of a three-year search process. Other states, including Indiana, Tennessee, and Ohio, also were considered as possible sites for the facility. Ultimately, the City of Versailles was chosen based on several key factors, including the desirability of the local Versailles community and surrounding Lexington region; available land and proximity to raw materials and transportation needs, as well as an attractive economic development incentive package and other assistance from the state of Kentucky,” explains Brandon Talbert, a site consultant with The Austin Company, which assisted in the site selection process.

More Than A Bakery also worked closely with the Governor’s Office, the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Woodford County Economic Development Authority, and Commerce Lexington throughout the decision making process. Assistance and leadership from these, and many other individuals and entities, helped the company make the location decision.

Construction on the More Than a Bakery facility is targeted to begin this summer, with manufacturing likely to get underway by the end of 2017.  Within a few years of completion, More Than a Bakery is expected to create more than 300 jobs that will include a comprehensive benefits package and the opportunity to work in a facility unlike any other in the industry.

More Than A Bakery is affiliated with Richmond Baking, the oldest family owned cookie and cracker bakery in the United States, dating back to 1902. Richmond Baking has facilities in Richmond, IN and Alma, GA where capacity constraints could limit the company’s continued growth. “The company has needed this kind of additional space for some time now,” says Bill Quigg, President and member of the fourth generation of family ownership. “The Richmond plant is bursting at the seams and isn’t easily adapted for current production methods and the Georgia facility has had 200% growth in two years. We know that the real work on our new facility begins now, and we look forward to collaborating with all of our local partners and authorities in Versailles, Woodford County and Kentucky to create a meaningful and successful situation for years to come.”

“We are experiencing very exciting times. We are growing a great team, creating something truly different in a work environment and culture, and More Than A Bakery has the stability of a company that is over a century old,” Crawford noted. “We want folks that work at More Than A Bakery to have a work experience unlike anything they have ever encountered. Simply put, we want our folks to live a good, balanced life. That is why we strive to be so much more…than a bakery.”
